Health and Social Care

Health and Social Care

Introduction to the subject:

Health and Social Care is a BTEC qualification which follows a vocational route. This subject has a clear pathway from KS4 to KS5 to allow students to experience the skills and qualities needed to pursue a career within health, fitness, or social care. Due to the nature of this course being predominantly course work, this subject instils organisation skills and empowers students to take control of their progress. Many elements of each unit of work develops communication skills and other life skills which provides students with the tools needed to progress in life outside of school

Students who study Health and Social Care at KS4 will have 3 lessons per week in years 9, 10 and 11.

Students will complete a range of units over the 3 years and work will be completed in a variety of ways.

As this is a BTEC qualification, students will produce work in a variety of ways, this includes role plays, practical assessments and computer based assessment.

The units that will be completed are:

Unit 1: Human Lifespan and Development (external assessment)

Unit 2: Health and Social Care Values

Unit 3: Effective Communication in health and Social Care

Unit 6: The Impact of Nutrition on Health and Wellbeing

Within unit 3, students will plan and run 2 practical activities which they will deliver to students in year 7 or where possible year 6 students will be invited to attend from our feeder primary schools.

When completing unit 6, students will experience planning and organising balanced meals for individuals with specific needs. This will incorporate food technology skills by creating recipes and, where possible cooking a balanced meal.

We believe that a vocational experience is vitally important, as by carrying out practical activities to meet the BTEC specification allows students to put their knowledge into practice and reinforces their understanding of each unit.

This level 2 qualification gains students the equivalent of 1 GCSE, awarded at a pass, merit, distinction or distinction* If students do not meet the standard required for a pass level, BTEC will award a level 1 qualification.

The level 2 course then allows students to progress onto the level 3 qualifications which we offer in years 12 and 13.

Subject News : (add any interesting information/upcoming events etc here) this will be launched in sept!

Every year, we select a class to complete a charity event to raise awareness and funds for a specific charity within the Health and Social Care Sector. These charity events are normally held during Chase Rocks and are a chance for students to put their communication skills into practice.

Level 3 students are given the opportunity each year to visit Chase Day Care Centre, which is a local care centre for young people and adults with specific learning needs. This is an opportunity to support individuals who may have barriers to communication and to witness how care is provided by ensuring dignity, respect and rights are maintained.

Many links with local Primary Schools have been established and continue to grow with both level 2 and level 3 students running activities as rewards with students at our feeder primary schools.

Level 3 students are given the opportunity each year to support Sport and Healthy Lifestyles Community to run Health Days. This ranges from taking part in Mental Health Day with year 7 and 8, to supporting staff who deliver sessions on physical fitness, drug and alcohol awareness and positive relationship sessions.
